Peonies and Lilacs – 2013
18″ x 24″ Mosaic on Masonite
Inspired by the changing of the leaves. I decided to make a flower with autumn colors. As for the background I used one chocolate Tootsie Pop wrapper instead of a mix of colors. Being a small mosaic, some of the material does need to be recognized to show what the art is made from. This opens up other possibilities with future work. Labels used are tagged in the image with thinglink. Notable wrappers include orange Starburst wrappers, Alaskan Summer Ale, Shiner Hefeweizen and Pomegranate Tootsie Pop. Spread the word about my art and Pin it to your boards. If you enjoy Instagram, please follow me @recycledmosaics
12″ x 18″ on panel board, the boxer mosaic is made with Stash Chocolate Hazelnut tea wrappers, Orange Shiner Hefenweizen labels, See’s Candy and imported chocolate bar labels, and various purple labels in the background. I decided to make an animated .gif to show the process from an iPhone picture into Illustrator and the final version. As much as it gets muddy in the process, it’s good to prep the subject as much as possible. On this mosaic I loosened up a bit in order for the labels to stand out better. In other words, not over thinking the process. Turned out great! This is the second dog I’ve made, with the other being a brindle Boston Terrier.

A tweet came over to my Recycled Mosaics account:
Absolutely made my night. How it happened? I have no idea. But it’s awesome to see my about.me page in the inspiration section. To me, about.me is an online business card that gives a brief bio and/or image yourself and external links to social media sites or blogs. With this I can show my art in a snapshot which has a further reach than me handing out a card or telling them to check out my art on my website or exhibit. I have one already I use here for my personal page which is in the bio section of the website.
Something to think about, is it worth the effort to constantly push ideas out in places like about.me, twitter, pinterest or instagram? I think it is, but always in moderation with quality posts. I was retweeted in twitter on my @recycledmosaics account the other day. I thanked the person, exchanged followings. However, my twitter feed immediately was blasted by the same type of tweets, consistently annoying. So I unfollowed and count it as experience. Would I ever be like that person spamming the twitter? Nope. It’s the fine line I need see and keep telling others about my art without all the spam/filler. After all, if I didn’t keep publishing everything and everywhere, I wouldn’t have been found and added to the directory.
I took this picture on the side of the road where I work here in North Fort Worth. Somehow there’s still a lot of sunflowers still blooming in 100 degree heat. This is one of four small mosaics I made in prepwork for my school’s alumni exhibit. I’m glad I learned how to work small and on paper. I didn’t think it would be possible. Most of the labels used in the mosaic are Shiner Bock beer labels, Lemon Starburst wrappers, Snapple Peach Iced Tea and Mary Jane candy wrappers. Spread the word and Pin it to your boards.
This is number three of five mosaics made in prepwork for an upcoming exhibit I’m participating in this September. By this time, I was getting the hang of the small area to work with as the exhibits requirements were on a 5 x 5 piece of BFK Rives paper. It’s not the ordinary surface I use, however I am glad I did give it a spin and it came out just fine. Labels used are several red and dark pink Starburst wrappers, some Shiner Bock yellow beer labels and Cherry Tootsie Pop wrappers. Giclee prints are available for purchase in the store. Be sure to Pin it to your boards and share with others.
